Scott,
If you haven't already, I would ask Jonathan if the 10kW was really necessary for the 27ft boat. Most turnkey providers (Electric Yacht, et. al.) would spec a 5kW system for this size of boat. Remember Jonathan was going with the 10kW with the thought that he would eventually put it in a larger boat. So, if you plan on keeping your 27, there's probably no need for the 10kW system.
I have an Electric Yacht 5kW system in my Victoria 26. You're spot-on in your thinking--if you're pulling the diesel out for maintenance, may as well consider the conversion. It has totally changed my boat and the whole experience for the better.
I can't say enough about Electric Yacht. Great system and excellent service and follow-up advice. Blog on my conversion can be found here: Coincidence - Victoria 26
I haven't updated this in awhile--I've been off grid for two seasons now. I hook the boat up to a portable generator 2 or 3 times a season to top batteries off. Things are going well. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Good luck!
Eric
