Re: [Electric Boats] RE: Tartan 30 Sailboat

Buddy,

Don't be shy - this group has been very welcoming of even simplistic beginners (like myself).
An electric conversion can be as simple as strapping a Torqeedo (or other) electric outboard to an outboard bracket, and plugging it into a bunch of batteries.

The kind of conversion that you're talking about is more complicated, but can still be done.
You have the option of buying a "drop in replacement" where you pull the old motor out, install the vendor's "box", hook it up to the shaft, and then hook up the batteries.

Or, you can roll your own, and get MUCH more complicated.

As for vendors -
So far, all of the vendors on this site have been very amicable towards each other.
They are clear about identifying themselves in their emails.
And, for the most part, MUCH of the information the give is basically true of their competitors systems as well.

If the vendors were not as helpful as they are, I would perhaps agree with the concern about limiting them.
But what I've seen so far in THIS group is that the vendors are EXTREMELY helpful.

If anything, it would be helpful to have some of the other vendors perhaps participate more.

John

Hi

I joined this Group because of my interest in converting to some sort of electric propulsion system. I really need a layman's
type of advice as to standards in comparison regarding opinions on vendors and do it yourselfers.

Is this purely a DIY forum ? do I need to be marine electrical techie to be here ?

Im almost afraid to ask a question,

I have found a lot of good info from one vendor specifically, but I really would appreciate a fair comparison here.

Maybe the Moderator would prefer to keep all vendors off here ??? I would find it a huge benefit as it would give everyone the option to
make a case in a technical sense and omit all the "marketing" fluff.

Are the vendors going to post a comparison chart here ? and then allow the DIYers to add a column also ?

Thank You

Buddy
