Yes. Protection of the battery terminals is important. There are rubber boots available commercially which I use to cover all the battery terminals.

So have a look at page 61 of the USCG Electrical Handbook which is in the "Files" section of this group.
Short answer:
All continuously energized studs and terminal need to be protected against shorting.
