Manual:
It depends on your type of battery. The manufacturer of my 8A4D AGM batteries specifically says not to install them in a battery box. While flooded lead acids should be. I think Lith Ion can be treated the same way as my AGM's. Flooded lead acid batteries vent (and can also spill acid) so a battery box seems necessary. I built a platform for my AGM's that sits where the engine was. Which helped the boat keep the same balance. But, each boat is different. There are some photos of my install here:

Now that the engine compartment is empty there seems to be plenty of space for everything, BUT: I'm not 100% sure on how to set up the battery bank.
Do people build actual boxes or rather platforms with straps? Second one was what I thought I would do and will start tomorrow unless there is major concerns?
