Re: [Electric Boats] New Member

Robert and Deborah,
Welcome to the 'Electric Boats Forum'.  There are several vendors who regularly visit the site.  I would recommend that you consider the following marine vendors in no special order for Plug and Play systems: Elco, Electroprop, eClean Marine, and Electric Yacht and for DIY kits Thunderstruck and Electric Yacht.

Vanguard data: LOA 32.5, LWL 22.3, Beam 9.2, and displacement 10300#s

Speed & Power Projections
Kts Watts
2.4 480
3.8 1920
4.8 3840
5.5 5760
6.0 7680
6.5 9120
Hull speed 6.3

A well engineered 10kW system should put out a good 8.5kW and therefore would push the boat with authority.  If you have the original A4 propeller, be prepared to replace the original propeller with a more robust propeller.

Robert and Deborah,

Welcome!

I live in Central Texas, and have been playing with electric options for my boats for a while.  So it will be fun to see what you come up with.  For me, the struggle was first: Should I really replace the existing engine?  Sounds like you're at least past THAT point.

There are several "kit" and "drop in replacement" solutions out there that all sound good from the motor / control part.  Just make sure you get a powerful enough system, and a prop that is properly matched.

The next hurdle, which is primarily determined by budget - is the battery bank.  From what I've heard and seen, my own personal experience seems to be pointing to Lithium batteries as the best way to go.  It's just a big pill to swallow in terms of budget.

Good luck!  And please feel free to ping me off-list if you would like to chat.

John

To All,
We wanted too take a moment and introduce ourselves to the group since we are new members.  We are experienced sailors and have recently purchased a Pearson Vanguard sailboat and have decided on electric propulsion.  Our other boats have all been diesel and we are looking forward to getting rid of everything associated with the combustion engine.

Since we are electric boat novice we hope to use this forum as a sounding board for ideas, suggestions, assistance and advice from those that have all ready traveled down this road.

We keep our boats in Kemah or Galveston, Texas when we are not out on the water.

Regards,
Robert and Deborah
