It’s good to see Halbach arrays being adopted by motor manufacturers…this is a good sign.
And from reading their literature, it appears that they do have low speed designs in mind (unmanned solar-powered high altitude propeller motors) as well as high efficiency propulsion for land based craft.
From their PPT presentation download, this sounds interesting for folks who would like a high efficiency, high power motor for their boat:
A larger motor suitable for the DARPA Transformer program:
18” diameter
15 kilograms
97% efficient at 150 hp, 3500 rpm
97% efficient at 100 hp, 2700 rpm
Capable of up to 5 hp/lb
Wow! As a direct drive, 2x the diameter and 1.5x the weight of an ETEK, you could deliver nearly 20x the ETEK rated power.
Coupled with improvements in battery power & energy densities, there’ll be some exciting applications, including in the marine propulsion environment.
Now if only these can be made available at a fair price-point.

Subject: [Electric Boats] Interesting motor
According to the company, they're not yet selling it on the open
market: they've built a number of prototypes, but haven't yet done
all the tests they need to. But it's an interesting-looking gadget
nonetheless: 95% efficiency, 7HP with a motor that weighs 1.4 lbs.
