Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Measured performance

I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
I was pleasantly surprised with what the owner of the big cray boat had to say , about his motorsailer.
It is a British North Sea design , an older one , that he built himself , and did a fantastic job.
His big advantage over his contemporaries is the saving on fuel . Like all of the cray men , he has a quota , so he can't catch more cray , all he can do is reduce costs .
And motorsailing allows him to maintain his speed , but reduce costs considerably , particularly fuel costs.
I have some photos of the boat , if anyone is interested.
While he is not really a candidate for electric motor sailing or hybrid motor sailing , I believe we are.
I'm looking forward to hearing of your observations.
Regards Rob J.

Rob,

I'll be interested in those observations too.  :)

My old boat never has pointed well or even got going in winds less than 5-6kts.  I know that the new prop will have more drag than the original prop, so I believe that my biggest advantage will be in "power-feathering" the prop, spinning it just fast enough to stop the drag but not add thrust.  This should result in slightly higher sailing speeds than the original setup because it should sail like the prop fell off, i.e. no extra drag.

You can expect a lot more data as the summer gets going.

Fair winds,
