i agree that it seems i am barking up the wrong tree with the GPX-5 unit.... i did find a couple of other units that could do the job.... one is Panda but about $15k and the other was a $7400 solution.... just located it again, it is a Genie unit the "Bio-Diesel/Alternator, 48V, 100A #BDBC-48/100" runs fine on regular diesel of course but more power than needed for me at least and i am still hoping for a much better price tag.... when i look at cobbling one together it appears that it could be done for maybe 4k... only 80% certainty on that because i haven't followed everything all the way to the end yet

I'm kind of interested in what you're looking to do with a GPX-5. As far as I can tell it is just a typical genset that puts out 230VAC (maybe available as 120VAC too). The trick part is that it uses your house battery pack to delay starting the geneset for light AC house loads. Then the genset fires itself up when the 230VAC loads exceed the inverter's ability to cover the demand. I don't see anything about the GPX-5 being able to monitor the house bank to prevent the DC system from going too low but the question would be how much DC current is available through the charger side of things. Perhaps you would be interested in the GPX-E products like the GPX-8E or GPX-12E. According to Mastervolt "The GPX `E' contains an additional module, which is the controller for the electric motor in an E-propulsion system. Now it is a real `one box for all' solution; just connect the power cables of your electric motor to the GPX and you can drive the boat." This sounds like it would "plug and play" with one of their $8000 5kW DC drives, but still no real info about DC output from the generator/charger which is the important part of a serial hybrid.
All of the GPX products are listed as "coming soon" on the Mastervolt website, so I can understand that few people are publishing price info on products that aren't actually available yet. But it's been my experience that Mastervolt uses premium pricing to fund their customer support and product development. I met a guy with a large Mastervolt AGM house bank that paid about 80% of what my Lithium bank cost per Wh. The boat was worth almost $1,000,000.00 so he wasn't too worried about prices.
If we look at Mastervolt stuff that is available, a "Mass Combiner" Combi Inverter/Charger that is 3750W continuous 230VAC and 2400W 12VDC charging (other than the DC voltage, it sounds like one part of the GPX) costs about $4000 at West Marine. Just add in the cost of the generator and the extra electronics and you should be able to ballpark the price of a GPX system. My guess, somewhere between $15k - $20k, maybe more. And then you still need batteries...
