In a multicell battery the better cells achieve full charge  first and then gas. Thats why the amount of water you add afterwards may be different per cell. If difference is large battery is declining.
There is more info in the Kindle article re charging rates.
You wouldn't think such a simple task could get so complex.

Good article useful as a primer for those just getting the idea of energy storage
do you plan to add anything about LiFePO4 cells?
I found the part about balancing cells of interest but not sure how to achieve this with multi-cell batteries.
brings me full circle in my decision about single cells vs. multi-cell
Back to the Hawkers I think.
just need a good source for high load diodes
for my switching / charging matrix
and a comparator circuit for balancing / equalizing
