Re: [Electric Boats] which transmissions stand alone....

Hi Michael. I have a pair of PRM80 gearboxes (Newage transmissions, England) which claim to be designed to spin in neutral without problems. Once I launch the boat I will be able to tell how they stand up to being in neutral while sailing. One encouraging thing is that I have found very few complaints about Newage gearboxes on the online forums, and this from a company that has been going for many decades with a fairly large installed base of gearboxes.

Subject: [Electric Boats] which transmissions stand alone....

I am wondering if anyone can say in general which transmissions do not require engine operation to provide lubrication?  With an electric motor attached to the drive shaft and spinning a prop with the engine in neutral some transmissions will be injured due to the fact that they are not being properly lubricated.  At the moment I am most interested in the Yanmars (2GM) but I am also always interested in how Betas hold up to any usage.
