Hi Gordon,
I converted my 24' pontoon to electric propulsion a little over a year ago and am very happy with the results. I considered various approaches, but ended up with a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0R and four group 31 AGM batteries. The actual conversion only took an hour or two to get to the testing stage. I then spent another day neatly running wires. With the standard Torqeedo prop, the top speed is about 7 mph using 4000 watts. Normal operation is about 4.5 mph using about 1200 watts. A typical outing (a few hours of continuous use) uses about 30% to 40% of the battery capacity. My favorite aspect of the new motor compared to the old 40 HP Mercury is that it always starts.

I'd rather not just buy an off-the-shelf electric outboard motor, but rather assemble the entire drivetrain myself together with a PWM controller. Any suggestions or success stories?
