RE: [Electric Boats] Rewiring DC electric system and Grounding

The Reach Of Tide’s current config:

·         Wooden boat with outboard motor, no underwater thru-hull fittings

·         36vDC propulsion and 12v house DC common at positive end (GE DC/DC converter makes it that way)

·         Link10 meter powered direct from lower 24v of 36v pack

·         Lester 36v/20a charger powered by 110vAC thru standard 3-wire shore power, case grounded to shore gnd only and output charge lines both isolated from ground

When at marina, I keep the outboard lower leg UP and OUT of the water to avoid any possibility of stray marina currents from causing me problems (especially with brass prop on aluminum lower leg).  As mentioned, when plugged in at the dock, the charger case and a single AC outlet inside the boat are grounded, nothing else.  The moorage is covered.

While underway, the outboard motor is grounded to the water and an unknown amount of leakage may be present between that and the 36v rails…uncertain.
