Re: [Electric Boats] Inverter Duty versus Standard Duty Generators

Besides the noise issue another reason why the Honda and it's clone inverter generators work so well is because the power they put out is very clean. So clean you can also use them to charge or power laptops and other sensistive electronics on board. Today's modern battery chargers have a lot of electronic components in them compared to the brute force transformer and diode chargers of yesterday. You take a gamble with failures in some of these units if you generator is not putting out really clean AC power.  They may work ok for construction sites where you use them to provide AC for power tools and the like. But, I would be real careful when trying to use them on sensitive electronics like laptops and more sophisticated battery chargers. Some might work ok some might not. IMO it would be a gamble.

A lot of people here seem to use the Honda Inverter Duty Generators (or their look alike) as their on board back-up for charging and or the "hybrid" operation of their drive. My question is in regard to, is the inverter duty really needed to operate the chargers that we use?

I understand that there may be some benefit with regard to noise. However, just looking at Northern Tools, they offer a lot of portable non inverter duty generators for a lot less money then the Hondas but are rated around 60dB.
