[Electric Boats] Re: starting my conversion in earnest tomorrow

 



Just a quick update, since I haven't taken the time to format any of the pictures or video, or even really look at them closely...

The engine is out, the fuel system is out, and the engine compartment is about as clean as it's going to get. I had grand designs of prepping, priming, and painting the engine compartment to be a nice pristine white, but the money for the paint and primer went towards a new cutlass bearing (which I thought was a bit more important at this juncture). I hit it with degreaser and a scrub pad, simple green and another scrubbing (several, actually), and then a good rubbing with acetone. The stains that managed to survive that are pretty much permanent.

So I have a few questions...

I'm planning on running a 4 x 4D battery bank of AGMs for 48V. Which means for longer trips I'm going to need to run a generator (worst case). I have heard at least a couple of folks mention they do this. Where do you normally put the generator when it's operating? Is it in any type of enclosure or just open to the elements?

Assuming a Honda EU2000, are you using a fixed power supply or charger(s)? Why? If you had it to do over again, what you choose? There are telcom 48V power supplies that would seem to be perfect, just minus the "marine" rating.

I think I've worked out my 12V system. But I want to get some more opinions, so I think that'll be a separate post.

I ended up doing an impromptu bottom job, and then did the topsides prep and treatment, which killed all my time. But the electric motor is getting mounted today, so that should really get things moving.
