My most recent subjective observations put my 3:1 planetary gear reduction unit (which includes the thrust bearing) as a substantial noise source. It's hard to objectively pinpoint the noisiest culprit - be it the motor, the 3:1 reduction unit, or the stuffing box. Just looking for some data. :-)
Maybe I should look at some sort of lead collar around the 3:1 unit.
