Re: [Electric Boats] Replacing Atomic with 0907 on the cheap, from scratch

Peter,

No need to gear if you choose a low RPM/volt and high torque/amp motor. Go direct drive with the correct prop as I've done on a boat of similar size to yours. By using a Lynch motor with dual row angular contact bearings and twin stators there is no need of an additional thrust bearing. I did the calcs up to a 12" prop with SKF bearings. It has been flawless. 600 miles last year and surfing down waves with a tad of regen at 7.5 knots. Max normal hull speed 6.2. Cruise 4 knots.

Also maybe run a 48V string and then limit the controller voltage/RPM to say a burst max of 1200 RPM and normal max RPM of under 1,000. This all saves gearing, is more efficient but still gives you a simple series string for range. Personally I'm running at 24V with 2 x 260 AH 8Ds and a 'reserve tank' of 2 x 130 AHs for other reasons which I won't go into here.
