Re: [Electric Boats] Electric Boat Video with Jean-Michell Cousteau

Hi Captain Mike,

These solar panels are Sanyo 225 watts at 42 volts each Maximum Power, so we see 85 to 90 volts coming in.   We are using a Midnite Solar Classic Charge Controller.

I have the 12 volt auxiliary running a relay which turns on 4 computer fans when the voltage comes up above 52 volts.   This is really nice because the fans only bring in fresh dry air only when there is sun, keeping the boat dry and smelling nice.   The fans exhaust into the rear lazarette which is configured like a giant dorade box.   Most builders don't provide nearly enough ventilation for their boats and this solves that problem.

I understand the new Sunpower Panels go up to 490 watts in the same size area.

Cheers,

James

Nice video. What voltage and wattage are those panels on board your boat? Glad to hear that solar is AGM's best friend as that is how I pretty much have kept things topped up for the past year. Though one of my projects this summer is to put the new blades on the wind turbine. Though Solar has pretty much been doing the job since last year. Also glad to hear the AGM batteries are holding up after seven years too.

Hi All,

I thought you might enjoy this new video that we took on Kapowai with Jean-Michell. Many of the benefits of electric propulsion are explained.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgH5EW7Zngo&feature=plcp

Kapowai has now been unplugged for 8 months!

Complete energy independence and she is always ready to go!

Solar Power is not only a very potent source of energy, it is an AGM's batteries best friend. The batteries are now going on 7 years old and are in great shape. The daily voltage bump without staying on float all day is the answer.

Cheers,

James
