John,
This thread is inside another thread so it might be difficult to follow. Disclosure: I am a dealer for Electric Yacht.
Two types of hybrid - Parallel and Serial. Parallel is what we just completed on my Columbia 9.6 (31.5 ft) which included a new install of a Yanmar 15hp diesel with an Electric Yacht WE7.0 Hybrid mounted above the transmission. Either the diesel or electric motor will push the boat or the diesel engine will drive the electric motor as a generator. The Serial hybrid is an all electric only propulsion system with a diesel or gas generator driving charge into a battery pack or directly into the electric motor. There are many variables in installation depending on your boating needs.
Check out the pictures as I think they are more elegant and my writing. Also the hybrid was installed in the boat after the diesel installation. Normally do not have to remove the boat from the water to install in either form.

With regard to the Catalina 30, I would not be so enthusiastic about the parallel hybrid as I personally would want to remove the somewhat unfriendly motor from the living spaces (mounted in the Galley). Also there would have to be a major rework of the engine compartment if mounted together. There is an option to install the electric under the cockpit but again significant boat rework required.
The several Catalina 30s we have done (somewhat more than 4) have been serial parallel with portable gas generators for remote recharge or to drive power into the battery systems while underway. Normally a 2000 watt air cooled system with the right charger will drive about 20 to 22 amps at 48v into the storage system. On the Catalina 30 or other like boat that will push the boat at just above 3 knots in modest seas. I am not wildly enthusiastic about the "Honda 2000 Solutions" except it is so elegant in its simplicity and so much less expensive and so extraordinarily easy to install. It is just not a high quality "Marine" installation but it works well.
We have done several boats which have their drive engines amidships even more than the Catalina 30, the Tartan 30 and the Yankee 30 come to mind. The electric installation is quite nice for the owners. The sailing characteristics of the Tartan and Yankee like the Catalina 30 are positive with the weight over the keel. It does make it difficult to live with an ICE in the living compartment.
The advantage of the diesel electric hybrid in either form: Much improved in its ability to push though under power for longer distances and when little wind. Significant power for house use for long passage making. Regeneration when available from sailing. Likely better resale value in a boating world that is just now getting comfortable with electric.
I see the parallel diesel electric hybrid as the better solution for the 35 to 45 foot sailor who needs a generator and would be willing to share the power load from their single diesel engine. They will also get regeneration because they are faster, reduce their diesel use as they do short day sailing with shore power, and they will get exceptional control at slow docking speeds.
I would not be surprised to hear from other Catalina 30 conversions who may have also found innovative ways to hybrid their boats. Please share pictures.
