Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Lyman 13

Let's compare apples to apples.......

The Torqeedo most-comparable solution is not $3,000. The closest to the equivalent power would be the Travel 503 for about $1700, plus $250 for the remote control (model # 1918), and eventually another $600 for a bigger second battery. Add $300 for a 1003 which would be much more powerful than the Minnkota 55.

What you would save is the cost of an amp-watt-tracking system, several hundred dollars worth of batteries and several hundred pounds of battery weight, and charger, battery switches, fuses, cables, remote control, etc.

Sure, the Minnkota 55 setup might come out a bit less than $2,000 but not by a whole lot and it would be much more complicated. Think about where you might place 200 pounds of batteries.

Thank you all for your advice. The Lyman 13 is indeed 13 feet long. By hefting the bow then stern on the trailer I'm guessing it weighs about 400 pounds, empty. I think I'll try the $400 Minkota Traxxis rather than the $3000 Torqueedo, which appears to have twice the power. If unsatisfactory I can upgrade, or maybe get two Traxxis units, but it will be a while before I finish preparing the boat and reporting back. I'll also have to figure out how to adapt the motor to the remote steering and throttle cables already installed.
