Re: [Electric Boats] FW: New Member from Iceland--- a Note or two

I had never heard of zero motorcycles ...
And their website on first look had no data on battery cost, lifetime, mass, power density ...
I also dislike manufacturers that dont disclose public technical data, easily and clearly, on their products page.

At this time, Tesla (on cars) is the world leader by mass/size with NMC chemistry, at 233 W/kg.
This is about 50% better (Ie a a lot) than the nearest competitors (typical ==  150W/kg (Nissan Leaf, et al)).

So far, there is zero public data or experience on Tesla energy products.

Likewise, less dense but cheaper chemistry such as that used by BYD, might sometimes make sense, if one could use the same batteries (not easily available outside china, atm, afaik).
BYD is the only comparable manufacturer by GWh.

E.g. Nissan leaf is much less by GWh per year, and the old batteries have held up less well than Tesla (partly due to much lower cycling on Tesla vs Leaf, which makes sense).

Nevertheless, a lot of factors affect the choice.

+fitloose - I already have a motor, and a gearing reduction from Thunderstruck. All I want to expand on at this time is the battery. I may also change my prop - but then again, maybe not. It is only an auxiliary after all.

I think if you were looking for power density by volume and weight then Zero Motorcycles pack would be beat Tesla's. Also their IP rated motor has a nice RPM/Volt of around 45 as I recall. Pack nominal voltage around 100V. You could use their chargers too and Hollywood Electric's faster Elcon charger. In fact Zero seek alternative applications for their systems. Here's a good webcast about their motor.
