In the case of the Racer system, it is an inline  planetary gearbox.

Actually, I'm thinking of asking James about a 90-degree bevel gear that would give my PM-20 system more room for batteries in front of the motor.

I run a 24V direct drive (no gearing) with 2 X 12.8V 200 Ah Lithiums which for lighter boats like mine with a loaded displacement of 8,000 lbs is just fine. Loaded max shaft RPM around 1,000 with 12 X 10 two blade. Double row angular contact bearings in my Lynch D135 motor act as the thrust bearing and load calcs with SKF bearings and that prop are just fine for surfing down waves.

I don't know any others on here that run 24V direct drive systems on small (26 ft) sailing yachts?
