We concur with James statement about the primary reason why gear a motor. Weight. The direct drive inboard motor system from Elco is a very good system using an induction motor and to get 10kW out it one of its models it weighs in at 230lbs compared to the ElectroProp, Electric Yacht, or Thoosa systems at about 60lbs. Second, since you also need to provide thrust management, it can be designed into the system as you design the gearing. Finally you also need to manage heat and again the framing and gearing actions can provide for heat management when designed properly.
I understand this is mostly a DIY forum, but there will be a gathering of electric marine propulsion vendors at Strictly Sail Pacific in SF Bay April 7-10. I know that Elco (outboard), Electric Yacht, ElectroProp, Thoosa, and Torqeedo will be at the show. It would be good to meet many of you there as I also know many of our clients will be attending and joining us in our booths.
