Re: [Electric Boats] New member to the world of Electric propulsion

Hi Dan,

I am in the planning stage for the conversion to a 48 volt  hybrid system. My intent is to charge the battery bank with solar and a 48 volt DC generator running off of the ICE.  The engine is a Perkins 4.236 so there is no concern about its ability to drive a large DC Generator.

I have thought about doing just as you suggest - going to a motor rebuilder/rewind shop and see what they can do and for how much.

Any guidance and thoughts along that line would be appreciate.

.

I am still, at heart, a ragman so this is purely a part time, tinkering project.

Hey James & Chris,
FYI, All the Polar Power "generators" I have looked at are actually Alternators with rectifiers.  They are NOT a true DC Generator.  The only thing unique about them is that they are large diameter and short.  But that is all.  I have found a couple of rewinding shops and motor builders that will make the same thing for a fraction of the cost.  But you have to know what you are asking for.
