[Electric Boats] Protecting the motor

Last summer, I installed the Thunderstruck-ev 10kw sailboat package in my Pearson 30 (8300 lb displacement, 30 feet long, 9.5 feet beam).  The Thunderstruck kit has a 10kw Motenergy ME1115 Dual-Stator Brushless motor.  The housing for the motor aluminum, and I noticed it getting a little white powder on it, so I pulled it to paint it.  In talking with a neighbor, he suggested that I just wipe it down with some WD-40, or some other light oil, periodically.  He feels that paint will just cause me problems, over the long term.  Also, I am worried about painting around the vent holes because I'm not planning to take the housing off (I was just going to use an artists brush around the holes).

I like the idea of just wiping with oil every once in a while because it would be simpler.  What's the basic wisdom of the list recommend?

Thanks,
Jeff
