Re: [Electric Boats] Large Sailing Vessel

The actual link is www.greenlinehybrid.com. If you go to greenline.com you get a movie studio.

The Greenline boat is a power boat and it is a hybrid with a diesel and electric. Sailboats offer a different perspective, but large sailboats that are cruising do need to have a diesel generator for charging not only the propulsion bank but also the house system.

There are a number of ways that the overall system can be configured and you can add solar and wind into the mix as well. However, solar and wind will not give you the amount of wattage needed to recharge a propulsion bank. It's like filling a large tank with an eye dropper.

Cruising boats can have electric propulsion - we've proven that on several boats so far. Even larger sailboats can go electric, but these are "diesel/electric" very much like the big cruise ships, submarines and even diesel train engines. It becomes a very efficient way to use our natural resources more wisely. Instead of two diesel motors on a large sailing vessel, you only have one, highly efficient diesel generator which is sized correctly to charge everything on your boat. The electric propulsion becomes just another load on the electric system.

Where this concept does not work are for those who are on a tight schedule and most motor at a high speed in order to keep that schedule - much like a power boat. For those sailors, electric propulsion may not be the best choice.

Thbaldwin .. we dont understand.
What dont you recommend ?

Whats greenline got to do with this ?
Where is there the vessel, 180 tons, with primary electric power ?

Thbaldwin .. What are you for or against ?

Volksagen marine had nothing on www.

The world best, most respected, most experienced, custom sail yacht builders, are probably the builders of the now FPB series, the Dashews.
They fall fall short in size and displacement, and no electric.

Palmer Yohnson et al have zero with electric, afaik.

So, I am very exited and happy to hear about a new, big, electric drive thing.
Even more if it has some real creds behind it.

Best, from me, ..

Thanks Tom.
But .. 180 ton sailing vessel .. that implies something over 25 metres, maybe quite a bit more.
And with electric primary propulsion !?
