Re: [Electric Boats] Desiderata

Vendor Alert
Stuart,
I would listen to what Eric says as I have found him to be very insightful. I do have a different perspective regarding the power you may need (40kW in my opinion) and regeneration capabilities from your 66ft boat.  I have put your boat information into our computer model and have the following data for your boat:

Data in: LOA 66ft, LWL 50ft, Beam 14ft, Displacement 52000 pounds.

Speed & Power for a 40kW electric motor
Kts  Watts
2.4  960
3.6  1920
4.8  5760
6.0  10560
7.3  21920
8.5  29760
9.6  44160
Hull speed 9.48

A 30kW motor should get the boat to about 90% of hull speed and the 40kW should get you to hull speed.  We would recommend a dc Genset of about 25kW to give you a 7kt cruising speed.

As far as regeneration, most have been very disappointed.  The reason for this is that most of us do not have a boat that is 40ft long and can sustain speeds greater than 6kts for a long time.  With a well engineered and well built system you will get significant regeneration.  We have seen regeneration that surprises us but only with the boats with larger waterlines.  The catamarans have enjoyed speeds and regeneration more so than the monohulls.  I would expect to see at least .5kW from your boat is done properly and would not be surprised at 1kW.  I like solar on boats but it does take away from the very classic nature of your Malabar XIII.

At this time I believe there are two motors available to drive your boat at the power level of 40kW - Elco's 10000 (it is not 100hp) and the Electric Yacht QuietTorque 40.0.  Both of these systems are about 40kW and would give you the performance equal to about a 65bhp diesel.  You may want to check with ElectroProp to see if James has a motor available.

I normally would not respond to this message on the blog but do a personal email but I thought the group would like to know what we have seen with these larger boats.  We can all enjoy your experience by watching you update your very special boat.
