Re: [Electric Boats] RE: catalina 27 conversion to inboard drive

Mike,

Just curious - On the 6 boats you saw, did you ever get any complaints of being underpowered in reverse?
I'm wondering if this was only a problem with the outboard configuration.

Plenty of power going forward.  And it was fine backing in calm waters.  Just not into a strong wind...

Vendor alert:

I have personally done 6 of the Catalina 27 here in Southern California.  The 5.0 is very adequate to push the boat with authority.  I have installed 100 and 150AH battery banks and they have a good speed (5.5 to 6.0kts) and range (12 to 15NM at 4kts):
Remove the old A4 is the biggest part of the project.  I have instructions I can share if this is part of your effort.  Installation is a snap with an Elco system (heavier), Electric Yacht kit, Electroprop kit, or eClean marine kit.  The mounting is a little tricky as you have a limited space between the stringers and the system must have the ability to be mounted in that limited space with easy adjustment.  Batteries are placed where the old fuel tank and also in the lower portion of the port lazarette to give you good balance.

Great boats, fun day sailing and weekend trips.  With a Honda generator and the right charger can do coastal cruising.
