Ebay lists many permanent magnet alternators for wind generators in various output voltages. These have permanent magnet rotors, so there is no field coil for voltage regulation. But they are very efficient as no power is consumed in the field coil. Voltage output is rpm dependent, which could be an advantage with an appropriate controller. One other thought... if driven by a small gas engine it may be possible to self limit the output current.
