Just a little note (and a little bragging!) about the WoodenBoat Show held in Mystic, CT last weekend.
My Harmony 25 Launch won both first place in the owner built powerboat class and the judges award for innovation. We were the only electric boat there although the Seaport operates an electric harbor taxi.
I took lots of people for rides and everyone just grinned when we pulled away from the dock with no apparent motive power.
The innovation award is interesting in that I don't think I would have won if it was 1909 instead of 2009. Then the gas engines would have been novel.
I made a chart comparing the Elco launches used as ferries at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago with a very similar size and shape boat offered by the new Elco company in 2008. The modern boat was not any better than the 1893 boat as measured by the "how fast, how far" criteria. Modern AGM batteries hold about two times the energy per pound as the old "piles" but that weight advantage was more than offset by old light weight wooden hull compared to the new heavy fiberglass hull.
