[Electric Boats] Re: thunderstruck kit with this browning gear drive?

I dont believe Thunderstruck makes motors at all. They just retail them. What motor are you talking about? Most, or at least many, small traction motors comply with the NEMA "C" standard. You can inquire Thunderstruck and see if the motor you are interested in is "C" face or not. Then ask the gearbox vendor if it is "C" face on the input or not. Also make sure the motor shaft and the input of the gearbox are the same. Most of the motors suitable for small boats use a 7/8" shaft. Unfortunately most prop shafts in small boats are 1" but YMMV. You can machine an adapter or find a journal bearing sleeve that will work as a bushing, to bring the 7/8" up to 1" and then use a 1' coupling.

As an excample, all of the Motenergy 5kw, 10kw, and 12kw BLDC/PMAC and brushed DC motors are all C face, AFAIK. All have 7/8" shaft. You can look up the NEMA standard and fabricate motor mounting plates, adapters, etx.  be sure that your gearbox is rated for axial lothinkthinkthinkads or you will be so, so, so sorry you didn't, unless you install a separate thrust bearing of suitable rating. You need to be asking the vendors these questions. Or else just buy and try. You haven't even told us what what motor you are talking about.

Why 36v? Why not 48v? Just curious. Higher voltage means less current and less line losses. Plus, at higher voltage, even the same line losses you get in a lower voltage system, matter less, being a smaller part of the total voltage. Above 48v (actually above 50v) there is a whole different set of standards which is why I didn't ask, "why not 72/84/120/144 volts?". 48v is the go-to voltage for small boats, for the most part. Granted, for an 1800lb boat it is not all that critical, but really, there is more stuff (inverters, chargers, dc/dc converters, etc) cheap and off the shelf for 48v than 36v. If it is too big for 12v (it is) then go 48v. JMHO. ..................

Bottom line, ask the vendor for the specs unless you are willing to at least share the make and model motor you are talking about.
