[Electric Boats] Re: Line Wrap on Prop Shaft

Keep a sharp eye out and always leave them to windward. They can be awful hard to see in time at night, though. But knock on wood, I have not caught a crab trap in years. If you wrap a warp up really good around prop and shaft, RPM will go down or current will increase. Motor and/or controller temperature will increase. Whether the controller will safely throttle back or shut down before blowing a fuse or tripping a breaker or having a meltdown or whatever depends on your controller and how it is configured. A well designed setup will throttle back or shut down when it detects an overtemp condition. A close eye on your meters will tell you something is going on in time to do something about it. One hopes, anyway. You may also detect an increase or change in vibration. And that trap following closely behind you at 4kt is another dead giveaway.

Be sure to have spares for ALL fuses in your propulsion system. I keep mine right there at the controller.

Remember that these traps are someone's property and that he counts on them to put food on the table and clothes on his kids and a roof overhead. Try to return it in one piece. They were not just put there to irritate you. If you have to cut, be sure to reattach float and trap. You don't want markerless "zombie traps" all over the place catching crabs that will just die and never be harvested.

We notice that there are guys who catch a lot of crab traps, and guys who pretty much never do. So obviously standing a tight watch will go far in reducing the chance of an incident.
