Silicon diodes will have a forward voltage drop of between .4 and .7 volt. Since that will be deducted from your regulated voltage, your batteries will not recharge as quickly. If you do go to diodes, you can use schottky diodes that have a much lower drop and are much more efficient.
If you can't find some that will handle your current needs, then I would recommend a high current audio relay. I bought both on eBay, so it shouldn't be hard to track down what you want. Look for something that will handle the highest current that it might be subjected to. Think starting current
