Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Where to even start

I agree with Eric the battery range issue has not been as much as a problem as I thought it would be. I still cruise the same places I did when I had a diesel. Like others when the wind is up I often don't exceed 90% of battery capacity in a lot of sails. Often it is only around 94%. I did have to motor for over ten hours this season when there was absolutely no wind one day. But, the Honda 2000 will run for 5 1/2 hours pushing the boat 3 knots before I need to refill the gas tank.  Like Eric I also try and keep the battery bank in reserve as much as possible. I'm conservative in drawing down the battery bank. If I have to motor I'll operate on battery alone until it has reached 80% of capacity usually this is a couple of hours of run time (depending on speed) then I will fire up the Honda to replace or augment what I'm using from the battery bank. if the wind picks up and I start sailing the excess amps previously used for the motor automatically start recharging the battery bank. Often by the time  I reached my destination I have pretty much already recharged the battery bank. If not when I run the Honda to use the computer in the evening it  gets topped up. If I'm staying put for a few days solar and wind can do the job of topping things up and keeping the bank fully charged.

I'll clarify my statement. Most of the people here that have converted sailboats have found that battery range is not as much of an issue as it seemed before we converted.

I'm sure that people with powerboats have more demand for consistant range.

When I converted, I was concerned about the potential range of my 8kWh battery pack. Since I've converted, the only time that I've discharged more than 30% of its capacity was when I was collecting performance data. That said, I'm glad I've got the extra capacity, just in case...

I'm pretty sure that Mike can chime in on this topic too.
