Just like many electric tools like table saws, routers and kitchen mixers, having a "soft-start" ramp up to full power reduces loads on drivetrains and users. The Sevcon controllers can be programmed to ramp down and back up again in about a second or more when changing direction which will allow for a lot of rotational energy to be dissapated. If one uses this feature, everything like belts, mounts, gears, couplings etc. should be last longer.

> I have a Sevcon with the delay. I added a brake mainly because I wanted to be able to lock the prop when sailing. It also works for the reverse issue. The motor control is more like using a diesel; pull the throttle all the way back (throttle down)to stop the prop then shift.
