So, what is the older controller that you have? If it is the mars boat controller (ME0504C), you can rig it to avoid the need to have a pause between fwd and reverse. Assuming that's the one, you need to ensure that the on/off switch is not mechanically tied to the throttle or fwd/rev. I have the BLDC mars and the matching controller and I can throw it from fwd to reverse without a pause.
