If your cable/satellite provider carries the PlanetGreen channel, the current episode of "Planet Mechanics" is about converting a water taxi to electric in Venice.

Those guys didn't do a lot of research, but for the water taxi they came out with a Torquedo, 3 24v battery packs and a movable set of solar panel that they claim can recharge the batteries while operating (may be true when they are in the open laguna, but when they are in the internal channels I am not sure of how much sun they get :)
After that they convert a small speed boat into an electric planing boat (using a couple of batteries and a motor from an electric GoKart).
Again. not a really scientific approach to the problem but it's entertaining (like, when one of them takes the water taxi out for the first time, and crashes into a couple of sailboats :)
