Don't know about DC, but for AC buy one or more "Kill-A-Watt" meters. There are various models in the $20 to $50 range.

Subject: [Electric Boats] Watt * Hour Meters
Hello All,
It's not strictly a marine question, but I'd appreciate some some help and any thoughts with finding a source on some inexpensive Watt * Hour meters with a totalizer function.
I'm wanting to measure typical daily & weekly energy consumption under different conditions - for the boatshop, house, boat, and camper. So I'm interested in both AC & DC versions from 12 to 220 V.
They don't have to be terribly accurate. It's all just to refine a guess and estimate anyway. And gathering this data will go faster the more meters I can afford to have recording various circuits at the same time...so price does have it's place....
Thanks, Roger L.
