The temperature sensors I have used have been potted into an eyelet that bolted to the battery terminal; one version on the positive terminal where the temp sensor was powered from the positive battery terminal and another version where the temp sensor was isolated. I think the preferred method is the latter. The battery terminal has the best thermal conduction to what is going on inside the battery.
If you can't bolt it to the battery terminal I think you could get close enough by having the cable with the sensor in a blob of heat sink compound between the cable and the battery terminal. __._,_.___
