[Electric Boats] Re: New member, new electric & solar powered motorboat

Thanks for the feedback Mike. Indeed, there's no EV capable of towing this boat (yet)...

The design purpose is to have a safe (not necessarily comfortable) boat when water/weather is getting rough, but its intended use is indeed on rivers, lakes and coastal area's. Windows are rated for seagoing vessels.

There's space for a 4kW generator, although I will use a portable Honda instead in order to keep the transport weight low (EU regulations).

The panels are walkable (Solbianflex), but can't be extended because of limited headroom, and (for personal reasons) I do not want the air draft to be over 5.9ft. I need to be able to navigate the Amsterdam canals and bridges;-)

I understand the redundancy aspect of having two motors, but would such a setup not be less efficient?

In the water it is an electric only. Good range and elegant solution for river or lake. I would question the current design for ocean/sea operations.
> I also agree with Carter that I would prefer to see a redundant system with two inboard motors for steerage and safety. I am still not sold on the recreational sized pod especially in a saltwater environment. It appears to me to have lots of windage and rather large window area. This could pose problems in open sea activity.
> I would very much like to see a small generator option for extended operation. A 4kw generator would likely service the boat well. I would also consider extending solar cover over the cockpit and consider using walkable panels and give the boat an upper deck. You might consider give the boat a permanent or collapsible fly bridge.

Cover every square inch you can find and then some with the highest efficiency solar cells you can find if you want to push that boat with solar energy. If you plan on making it a diesel hybrid with a token solar panel then you're finebut if you really want to get around on the Sun, you'll needa lot more solar panels.

Trailerable, easily maintained, minimum (air) draft, comfortable, ready for all seasons, safe at sea. She will be powered by a 10kW steerable pod, running on a 30kWh lithium battery pack and 2kWp solar panels. We are currently finishing the design, selecting the (Dutch) yard where she will be built, and finalizing the specifications with several suppliers. Hull number 1 will be ours, but I'd like to see whether there's a broader interest in this project, especially when prices of solar panels and batteries are coming down.
