When we toured the hybrid I did not recall if it used the Voith-Schneider system or a conventional drive. As you can imagine, the Voith-Schneider System is very expensive but absolutely remarkable in running the boats. We were also on a traditional tug and they gave us a demo of 3/4 speed forward and 3/4 speed sideways and it was the same.
This is an article about the hybrid. The idea is that the tug goes to station and stays on station with the electric and only uses the massive push diesels when guiding a vessel. They do not necessary push these very large ships as the ship can spin their own prop, but the tug can guide them into very tight spots.

The harbor pilot takes over from the captain of the vessel and gives all orders from the bridge of the vessel. The tug just becomes part of the propulsion system of the vessel. Very cool.

The gear box in the engine room is is size of a modest dinner table. Remarkably quiet for what is inside the gear box inside the engine room but you must wear full hearing protection.
