Kerry,
No need to wait, it can be done and it is unlikely there will be any major technology breakthroughs in the near future. Go for it!
Check out http://www.solarwave.at/project/boat.html and http://electricsolarpoweredboat.com/index.html for two examples of what you're thinking of.
The solarwave guy has some speed data somewhere on his site and the Ra guy told me he can make 12mph with his boat a full trottle and 6 mph off the sun alone using two Torqueedo 4.0s. I can make 5 mph in my 20 ton monohull at full trottle and about 4 mph directly off 5 kW of solar with no help from the batteries using an udersized, inefficient golf cart motor.
And if you look around , there are many others achieving similar results.

No one has told me it is not possible, YET. With todays tech. ever changing controlers, switches balancing lithum batteries when charging....what next. I am considering a cat multi hull appx 50 ft. X 15ft. 600 sq. Ft of solar pannels. Would someone like to take a ruff guess of as to what kind speed I could expect, or do I need to wait for the next invention in. I also looked at RTD thrusters as a primary source of drive and direction. Thanks..... Kerry
