NdFeB magnets can have a surface flux of up to 1.2 Tesla for the highest
grade, but yes, they are expensive, especially if you are making an
axial flux motor with a central single stator and twin rotors, one each
side of the stator, with each rotor having a steel or cast iron backing
plate to provide the return flux path. However, such a motor will not
only be efficient if you have got the topology of the stator coils
right, but it will be surprisingly powerful.

Regarding motor design software. Can someone who is more au fait with
this sort of thing have a look at www.emetor.com? It's a Swedish
company with on-line magnetic simulation purely for BLDC motors. They
haven't got everything finished yet, but at the moment the limited
functionality is free to use if you register on the site.
