I've made NiMH 12V battery packs x 2 for an electric wheelchair project and used a 12V NiMH charger on both. Then I moved to 12V 10aH NiMH cells by Corbasys in USA to power next version to give 24V 20Ah pack.
This was charged by a 24V NiMH dedicated charger with no problems. NiMH need to be charged to where there is a peak then drop in voltage - called the Delta V point. Charging past that point causes heat and destroys battery. At one point I charged a Corbasys 12V 10Ah pack with a good 12V standard charger and overheated it to point of it blowing its safety valve - DEAD battery.
You can buy cheap NiMH chargers and you need to as voltage alone is not enough. Mine also had a thermocouple shut-off as a back up in case Delta V was not detected.
Please don't try and charge a NiMH series pack with a normal charger EVER
