Re: [Electric Boats] high voltage again

Yes bought a VFD and motor off ebay. 3hp 2200w motor, 80%efficient VFD, Sine wave inverter and 110 to 220v transformer. Could not talk myself into a 200+ voltage battery bank with no real way to reduce the voltage in an event. So used the DC to AC stages built into an inverter.  The losses are high but one advantage was the ability to use an off the shelf genset for extended motoring.

If you feel the pot is a questionable device wire a harness for a plug in pot and only use military grade device.

Can you do it? yes
Would I do it again? maybe

I am looking into Microchip development board and software to make my own VFD. Rewiring an old high efficiency 3phs motor to run with 48v supply and limit the voltage. I expect this to take many years but it is only a project to play with, and an excuse to spend the money.

I installed a VFD (variable frequency drive $400 )on a convayer at the plant yesterday and I was thinking that with a used 3 phase motor 3 or 5 HP($100?), a pot and a gear reduction one could build the cheapest drive possible . The battery bank would be nom.288 vdc. Lithium probably but at 2+ amps per horsepower any small battery could perform 24 X 12v . Any one know the voltage of a Prius ? Im sure there is a wrecked one by now.Of course we must be safe but I believe that industry will lead us down this path
