Re: [Electric Boats] high voltage again

low voltage requires large conductors and large plates on the batteries. Ohmic loss burns lots of power because current is high if any appreciable power is involved..
Higher voltage just requires care. Above 600 volts it becomes harder. 288 volts is a reasonable value to handle with easily obtainable components.
Just keep fingers away if powered up.
I prefer removeable links for fool proof disconnects.

I work with VFD pumps and air handler units all the time too and have considered just what you are suggesting. The only way it works though is if you get a good deal on used equipment, which does happen, but if you compare the regular price for this stuff it isn't that much cheaper if at all. At least for the some of the equipment I looked at.

I installed a VFD (variable frequency drive $400 )on a convayer at the plant yesterday and I was thinking that with a used 3 phase motor 3 or 5 HP($100?), a pot and a gear reduction one could build the cheapest drive possible . The battery bank would be nom.288 vdc. Lithium probably but at 2+ amps per horsepower any small battery could perform  24 X 12v . Any one know the voltage of a Prius ?  Im sure there is a wrecked one by now.Of course we must be safe but I believe that industry will lead us down this path
