[Electric Boats] Re: Where to even start

I concur with what Eric has stated. My experience and that of most of my clients is with AGM batteries. Sizing the battery pack is very personal and really depends on what the sailor wants to do and how they recharge.
As an example we have found that when the AGM batteries on my boat which has a displacement of about 9000 pounds was originally sized, I wanted to be able to do a Catalina passage both ways of about 40 miles total. I now understand that the 300AH 48v battery pack is really too large for my 95% sailing needs as I almost always come back to the dock from my normal day sailing which included 40 minutes of being under power with a close to 100% charge. I can not pull enough power out of my batteries unless I do a passage making and therefore my charger does not top off my AGM batteries. To solve this problem, we often sail with the motor on and when under power try to pull the batteries down every couple of weeks.
Right sizing for your boat is really important and only you know where and how much motoring you will do. I really envy the ease of management of the Lithium batteries. I also wish that there was a more elegant solution to the recharge needs rather than the use of a Honda generator, which is one of the most dependable ICE I have ever owned.
