That is not correct Dan..
Colreg part A-General, 3. General definitions:-
(b) The term "power-driven vessel" means any vessel propelled by machinery. (c) The term "sailing vessel" means any vessel under sail provided that propelling machinery, if fitted, is not being used. ********
Your main engine may be running and supplying electrical power to ancilliary equipment or mechanical power to ancilliary equipment such as bilge or fire pump.
The vessel only becomes a power driven vessel if the propellor shaft is engaged to the drive train by whatever means.

Power If the engine is running you are considered power even if it is not engaged.

recently there has been a lot of discussion about sailing with the motor running.
Does anyone know where do we stand with the navigation rules, are we power or sail? from
"RULE 3 General Definitions For the purpose of these Rules, except where the context otherwise requires: (a) The word "Vessel" includes every description of water craft, including nondisplacement craft and seaplanes, used or capable of being used as a means of transportation on water. (b) The term "Power-driven vessel" means any vessel propelled by machinery. (c) The term "sailing vessel" means any vessel under sail provided that propelling machinery, if fitted, is not being used."
is there something out there that covers us or are we power boats?
