Re: [Electric Boats] celling fan motor...???

Re using a LARGE trolling motor on your 24 ft boat.  I used with great success a 36 volt MotorGuide on my 20 ft British Snapdragon.  I took the assembly apart and faired the powerhead into the rudder.  This reduced drag and protected the prop.  It was howerver slow, about 4.5 mph top speed.  With a 2 blade prop reverse into a breeze was almost impossible.  A 3 blade MotorGuide aluminum prop worked well.  Price in Canada was over $1000 and only $600 and change in Vermont, USA.   Manoverability was excellent for docking as the motor in the rudder could be turned like an outboard to turn on a dime.  My 23 ft Helsen motorsailor has an inboard electric and is much more electrically efficient but direct drive inboards don't manover  nearly as well.  I have no experience with a Torqueedo bbut would look for a damaged one to dissassemble and put in a rudder.
Toying with the idea of getting a small Motorguide again for my rudder just for easier docking or maybe making one into a bowthruster.
Good luck with your project.

Hi all,
I'm a new member and a proud owner of a SanJuan 24. After having the boat shipped to Sweden ( were I now reside ) from Vancouver B.C. someone decided they needed that 5hp Merc outboard more than I.... so now i'm considering going electric rather than mess around with gas, oil and all that jazz. Besides, the outboard deal is ugly.
I was considering at one point going just with a powerful trolling motor but I like the inboard idea better. No problems with tides and currents here, just need to use it for take-off and landing...
Has anyone ever considered using a POWERFUL ceeling engine fan motor ? It has forward and reverse + various speeds. If one changes the ( pull string ) switch, why not ?
Any thoughts on this dear E-boaters ?
All the best
Roand
