I have a 48v LFP battery charged from solar. I have just finished a 3.5kW/48vdc generator using a salvaged Farymann diesel and a PMAC generator I got on eBay for $350. It puts out between 70 & 80 amps. This lets me cruise at 3-3.5 knots w/o boost from solar.
Last part yet to do is wire gen on/off switch thru BMS so in the event of an over voltage cell, the generator will disconnect/shut down.
If I were serious about cruising, I'd install an 18kW 48vdc generator - about $20k.
