Re: [Electric Boats] Yahoo Groups changes

This is a copy paste from another group I follow. It has some info on issues if moving to groups.io.

----------

Overview

------------

There are several ways to download the content from the existing yahoo group.  Mostly these methods save the data in CSV file format and/or zip files.  So there should be no problem in archiving the existing data.

The problem is all about how to import the data into a new site where it is properly catalogued, organized, searchable, attributed to original creator etc, etc., rather than being all thrown together in some big zip file.

Groups.io seems to be the solution of choice.

Groups.io has an automatic process to download and import our entire yahoo group preserving the user list with all their individual settings, photos, messages, files etc with proper attribution, message threading, much better searching etc.  Perfect.

In order to make use of this feature, we need to give Groups.io moderator privileges on our yahoo group and then like magic the whole thing will get transferred.

Problem

-----------

So far Mike, an existing moderator on our group, has been unable to add moderator privileges for me.  So unlikely he will be able to do it for Groups.io.  I do not know who the owner(s) and moderator(s) currently are for our group.

There seems to be a process whereby Yahoo will promote a member to owner if the existing single owner cannot be found.  It sounds like a long drawn out affair. The proposed member has to have been a member for some time.  The group has to vote for this member to be the new owner using the group polling feature.  There are a few other requirements as well.  There is always the possibility that Yahoo will just ignore any such requests we make.

Group Owner

------------------

The yahoo group owner is the person who originally created the group and has unlimited, superuser powers regarding the group.

The group owner can promote any other member to be an owner.

I have reviewed a couple of early posts in 2007 when this group was first created.

I believe that Kim ***** was the original creator and hence owner of this group.

If I am not mistaken, I believe that Kim has passed away?

I found an email from Kim in the archives from 2007 which states that the group now has 2 owners and 1 moderator but no names or other ids were provided.

I have sent an email to *****@yahoogroups.com to see who, if anyone, answers to that name. I have also cc'd this email to that address

Group Moderator

-----------------------

The yahoo group moderator is a person designated by an owner with certain admin rights.  Moderators can be assigned all or just some of the admin rights of an owner.  The only admin right not assignable to a moderator is the right to DELETE the group.  One of the rights grantable to a moderator is the right to "Add, remove and change moderator privileges."

To Troubleshoot Mike's problem:

--------------------------------------------

Mike said:  "For example it says to click on the name (i.e. your name) and then click on ROLE to promote you to a moderator but there is no response at all when click on Role which simply shows you as a member."

I created a new yahoo group:

Here are the details on ***TestGroup:

Group home page: https://groups.yahoo.com/group/***TestGroup

Group email address: ***TestGroup@yahoogroups.com

I have sent a few invite requests to some owners who indicated IT experience or otherwise would help with the transfer.

In my testing I have found that if a moderator does not have "Add, remove and change moderator privileges" then nothing will happen when they click on name. (They will never get the popup box that has the ROLE dropdown box. )  So I believe that Mike probably has the correct privilege and something else is the problem.  If anyone has some ideas and wants to have a look at the problem then by all means join my group and I can promote you to owner/moderator and you can have a go to see if you can duplicate Mike's problem.

Is there anywhere else the content can be moved to? There is a wealth of information that would be tragic to lose.
